Governors

Daubeney Middle School Governors

Daubeney is a “Trust” school, part of the Kempston Education Trust.  The Governors have responsibility for all aspects of the school: we employ all of the staff; we are required to ensure that the Headteachers are providing the best possible education for the pupils; we have to agree the budget and priorities for spending.  We have the position of “critical friend” and so have to test and ask the Headteachers to provide evidence that their management of the school will lead to the success all pupils deserve.

There are currently 16 of us: 4 from the staff; 2 appointed by the Local Authority; 5 Parent Governors; 3 co-opted from the Community and 1 Foundation (appointed by the Kempston Education Trust).  Governors usually serve a term of 4 years, 2 of the Staff Governors and all Parent Governors are elected and the Governing body selects the 3 Community Governors.

We have five sub committees to help with the decision making:

  • Finance and General Purposes Committee deals with the school budget, staff, health and safety and buildings

  • Curriculum Committee deals with the education and the standards achieved by Daubeney

  • Salaries Committee sets the pay of all of the staff each year

  • Disciplinary Committee would deal with any formal discipline matters concerning the staff including the Headteachers

  • Exclusions Committee reviews or hears any appeal by parents against the Headteachers’ decision to permanently exclude a pupil.

Governors, F&GP and Curriculum committees meet twice a term and the other committees sit when they are needed.  Most Governors have a link to an area of the curriculum.  This link is where they work alongside the teacher and discuss issues relating to that particular subject area.  Other Governors have a specific responsibility such as Health and Safety, Special Needs, Gifted and Talented pupils, etc.
